When a Small Patch Might Be Reasonable
Very fine hairline cracks limited to the finish coat, with no staining, softness, or spreading, are sometimes candidates for a basic sealant or patch product designed for EIFS finishes. Even so, using the wrong product or technique can trap moisture rather than shed it, so proceed carefully.
Signs You Should Call a Professional
- Cracks that follow panel joints or run in straight structural lines (possible substrate movement)
- Any staining, discoloration, or darkening around the crack
- Cracks near windows, doors, or roof-wall intersections
- Cracks that have grown or multiplied since you first noticed them
- Any softness when pressing near the cracked area
Why DIY Patching Can Backfire
EIFS finish coats are specially formulated to match texture, flexibility, and vapor permeability. A mismatched patch material can crack again quickly, or worse, seal in moisture that’s already gotten behind the wall. What looks like a simple cosmetic fix can end up masking a bigger problem rather than solving it.
